Accomplishments

May 1938 - formed the Bustamante Industrial Trades Union

July 16, 1943 - formed the Jamaica Labour Party

December 14, 1944 - the JLP comprehensively wins Jamaica's first general election under universal adult suffrage.

1949 - the JLP again wins majority seats in the general election of that year.

June 1955 - awarded Knight Bachelor to the Queen, thus becoming SIR Alexander Bustamante

April 19, 1962 - the JLP wins the national elections on August 6, 1962, and Bustamante becomes the first Prime Minister of an independent Jamaica.

June 1967 - received the Order of the Knight Grand Cross of the British Empire

1970 - declared one of Jamaica's national heroes.

DID YOU KNOW ... that Sir Alexander Bustamante was the only Jamaican to be declared a national hero while still alive. In 1970 he was declared one of Jamaica's national heroes. He was 93 years old when he died on August 6, 1977.
